Can I apply for an ITIN if I’m waiting for a Social Security Number?
No. If you are eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN), you cannot obtain an ITIN, even if you have not yet received your SSN. If your SSN application is pending, you must wait for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to make an eligibility determination. If the SSA determines that you are ineligible for an SSN, you may apply for an ITIN with the appropriate supporting documentation, provided you otherwise meet the IRS eligibility requirements.
